Brassica November Status Update

Hi!

As you likely noticed, November is almost over and the first half of Brassica's Act 3 is still not released.

We're sorry about the lack of updates regarding our progress over the last few weeks. While we still thought we could at least finish the update before the end of the month, we used all the time we had to work on Brassica rather than writing another one of these posts.

As of now, the writing is in its final stretch and in terms of art, only the CGs are still missing. As usual, most tasks have been taking longer than anticipated, especially in terms of writing. Some scenes grew as we further defined the events in detail or when we had new ideas while reviewing their first draft.

None of this should be news to us though, so we apologize for missing the previously announced release window again.

Two years ago we might have crunched to at least finish production of the content in time. But aside from being unhealthy and detrimental to both quality and our own ability to work effectively in the long run, it wouldn't have changed much since there is still implementation work to do once writing and art are done, and rushing this as well would not lead to satisfying results. (´-ω-`)

One of the downsides of developing a game with only two people is that less work can be done in parallel. While I (Felix) work on the writing, I can't work on the UI and vice versa. For most of the year our priorities regarding that shifted back and forth. First we were planning to release a UI update before Act 3, hence temporarily pausing work on writing. As this stretched on longer than planned, I moved back to alternating between writing and UI work and we changed plans to release the new UI along with Act 3. In hindsight, this lack of focus in addition to only being able to work part time on Brassica for the last few months, made it difficult to make progress as quickly as I used to in the past.

Earlier this month, we changed plans again to focus on the content of the game and release the first half of Act 3 with only parts of the new UI. We do think that this was the right call, but we made it a little too late to still meet the November deadline.

So what now? We will keep working to finish the missing content as quickly as we can. Though after this long waiting time, we want to make sure that even without all the new menus, the experience feels in no way unfinished. Sprite implementation and animation, along with sound will take some extra time, but the end is in sight and we will do all we can to release this new update in December.

Until then, we have decided to post weekly updates of our progress on Twitter. This will include things like number of words written, assets produced, scenes edited or animated, or whatever else we worked on over the week. You can expect these posts every Monday evening (GMT+1).

We hope this will make this last stretch of development for the update more transparent.

Once again, thank you so much for your patience, and we'll be back next Monday with the first weekly progress report!

We wish you a lovely week until then!

Hi, thanks for asking! Our plans obviously didn't work out as we hoped, but we've been slowly making progress (you can check our posts on Twitter for more details) and we're planning to give a proper status update again here on itch later this month.

Thanks for your patience <3
